I almost missed my plane flight today and well, a few individuals I encountered along the way actually did miss their flight simply because the everyday consumer doesn’t know about all the AIRPORT RULES.
And so the short story is that when I arrived at the airport today I found a spot to put my car in the short-term parking lot on the grounds of Sky Harbor Airport. I knew I was early and so I felt no need to rush and find a shuttle to the terminal…always seems like when you are not in a hurry a shuttle arrives within minutes (makes me think of that song Ironic). Anyways I hop on board with about 8 other passengers heading off to the terminals and most are happy and excited to be traveling to their destinations. When all of the sudden, out of nowhere the shuttle-bus driver pulls over to the road side, opens the doors and proceeds to head outside…mind you he made no statement or announcement whatsoever to the passengers, he simply stopped the damn bus! A few of us started asking one another what is actually going here…and when we looked out the window we see the driver sitting on a bench lighting up a cigarette looking as though he didn’t have a care in the world. After seeing this all unfold before my eyes I told the person sitting next to me I just have to check this out myself and I got right up and went out to address the driver and inquire about this delay. He responds very politely and says “…sir I am sorry you didn’t know, however all of the shuttle drivers are mandated to take a ten minute break every 40 minutes…I will be back on board shortly I assure you…he says”. I start to chuckle to myself because in all my years of traveling by plane I have once experienced this situation. When I got back on the bus I had 3 people ask me what’s going on and I proceeded to recite what the driver told me a moment ago. Well sure enough a family of 4 was enraged to say the least, simply because this (totally unexpected) delay guaranteed they would miss their flight to Chicago-land. And I believe I can speak for everyone on that bus and say this is one of the most outrageous displays of being totally irresponsible to the Consumer, I have ever witnessed. Consumers who depend on this form of transportation to get them to the terminals on time, have a right to know about these mandatory breaks and that they should factor these potential delays into their total travel time. And I am here to warn you all that if you don’t take this warning into consideration, the next time you are heading to the airport…you just might be the one that misses your flight as well!!

Why would the driver pick up passengers if he knows he is going on break? And, along with the required (?) break is he also required to not make any mention to the busload of passengers who have been abandoned with no explanation? Thats rude, unprofessional and disrespectful.
