“The Powerful Actor”
The Powerful Actor combines personal power with the acting technique developed by Jack Donner, who has been acting, teaching, directing, and writing since 1952. Among Jack’s former students are the talented director/producer/writer Barry Levinson and the accomplished actors Craig T. Nelson and Barbara Parkins. In the book, Donner defines personal power as a function of the actor’s (and each person’s) uniqueness. Donner encourages and guides the reader to harness her and his personal power and to acknowledge their uniqueness as a natural and irreplaceable phenomenon. Donner describes that power and uniqueness as the elements that produce the “magic” in a
performance and lift one’s work to the level of artistry that is the “ticket” to one’s recognition and success. The book also offers a step-by-step process of acting, constructed by Donner over the decades, that is tailored to evoke that personal power and illuminate the uniqueness in one’s work.
In 1986, Jack became a licensed psychotherapist to more deeply understand the dynamic of human function. He has extracted pertinent elements of that discipline that every performer can readily understand and utilize in her or his work, in order to enhance his theory of acting.
