GOOD NEWS!!!!!!!!
”There has been overwhelmingly customer feedback that people want access to open bootloaders on HTC phones. I want you to know that we’ve listened. Today, I’m confirming we will no longer be locking the bootloaders on our devices. Thanks for your passion, support and patience,” Peter Chou, CEO of HTC

New Update posted on Facebook !!
https://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=10150305151453084
What is the point of this?
The idea of this is to convince htc to unlock the bootloaders and disable the NAND protection on their phones
Why should I support this?
Unlocking the bootloader and disabling the NAND protection will allow users to keep their phones up to date using custom roms such as CM7. Take the htc wildfire for example. In december 2010, HTC released a 2.2 update for the wildfire. However, hidden in this update was a new bootloader which could not (and still can not as of the 9th may 2011) be modified. It is unlikely that HTC will release another update for this phone, meaning that users are going to be stuck on this rom. The reason? So HTC can sell new phones. However what this is doing is putting users off buying HTC’s devices since rival companies have announced that the users can easily unlock the bootloaders on their devices.

Locked Bootloaders of HTC = Very Least sales of HTC
Please unlock bootloaders of all phone to increase sale of ur smartphones as well as to increase the interest to buy HTC for your customers...
Unlocking the bootloader will help.
I fully support this move.
India
compared wildfire with bootloader 0.8x and 1x and 1x was less apps loaded but still i had 20mb free space though i installed all apps on SD and 0.8x loader wildfire had mixed sd and in phone memory installed and funny still had 85mb free internal memory ..
dont understand why htc made locked new bootloader and made phone heavier.
please open it up
...remember microsot...
Dear HTC UNLOCK OUR WILDFIRES
UNLOCK !!!!!
I'm Desire HD (Ace) user and would buy me the Sensation if its released but if the bootloader is locked I buy the Galaxy S II!!!
so UNLOCK!
SGS2 all the way, thanks to its open source code on its ROM and open bootloader. Here I come! :D

htc wildfire 2.2.1
Don't drop to their level.
If you are unlock your bootloaders, I'll be happy to buy from you again and again. If not, however, I will be forced to look elsewhere.
HTC built its reputation on being mod-able. This could be very damaging for their sales.
Former G1 owner, currently G2 owner with 5 HTC Android phones in my immediate family (all running custom ROMs)
I will not purchase any phone with a locked bootloader that I can't customize to /my/ needs.
I have been a happy customer with you since the T-Mobile G1(First Android Phone). You make quality devices, but when you lock your phones your not gaining anything but mad customers. I will be switching to another manufacturer(as well as many others) until this is resolved. Please HTC I do not want to have to settle for Samsung, LG, or worst Motorola(rumored). They have all embraced the unlocked bootloaders.
Sincerely,
Espiridion
It will only cause user to swing to other brand. :(
I'm paying for the hardware, I should be able to do whatever I want to it.
htc will lose me, my family, and my friends as customers if they continue this practice.
If we seemed outspoken when we were thrilled with your devices, just remember bad news reaches an even larger audience. We love HTC products but this decision forces our hand... we will have to go elsewhere in response.
I don't want to leave, please don't make me.
Your Supporter,
Xxsteven69xX@gmail.com
If my phone would receive a locked bootloader, my opinion about HTC would change instantly. At the moment I have no reason to install a custom rom, but I am 100% sure that the day will come.
Other manufacturers are doing so already, you'll lose brand loyalty quickly if you don't respond.
so unlock it or offer a way to do it (like Sony Ericsson)
...especially if I've bought the phone and it's **my** phone, not HTC's...
HTC FAIL! - Sony/Samsung are leading the way!
your software is fine. sense is passable. but it becomes worthless if you dont let me own the device i PAID GOOD MONEY FOR.
i like your hardware, but dont make it become worthless to me.
I only recently rooted my phone and was amazed at what extra functionality it gives.
Come on HTC, show your android customers a bit of love :)
Think more to develop a solution for a worst case scenario to bring a bricked phone to life again than to think about solutions where your money givers get more and more angry.
Android is meant to be fun but if I can't play under the covers I'm not interested.
Come on HTC do the right thing, after all you are making a huge profit so give something back.
....unlock
I used to never buy motorola for the same reason and now HTC is playing the same anti-consumer game.
Congrats HTC, you just lost me to Samsung.
if there werent custom roms for ANDROID, then it wouldnt be as big.
HTC makes good phones but they need to remove bootloader etc.
So a locked smartphone for me is absolutely useless. (Think of the newest Android bugs and the sluggish response from the manufacturers...)
I thought my next one will be a Sensation... as it seems, I was wrong.
It's a shame HTC!
you pay you decide
Si quitan esta posibilidad, ya buscare otra marca que la permita, en mi proximo telefono
I, for example, i'm gonna buy another company's terminal because rom changing is possible...
Be inteligent!
Custom roms are great and add to an already good HTC rom.
HTC разблокируйте наш огонек, а то не как не получу над ним полный контроль.
But, next Phone is going to be Samsung.
Let me change the bootloader.
But ended up with Galaxy S2 instead of Sensation because of the bootloader.
HTC Desire owner
withaou root, it's almost as bad as iPhone :(
for a free Android!
HTC needs to unlock their bootloaders for this to be possible
http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/29/sony-ericsson-will-let-you-unlock-bootloader-on-new-xperia-andro/
HTC Legend Owner that will be shopping Sony Android next time....
I want to be able to do whatever *I* want with *my* device : customize it, hack it, ... Afterall, it's *my* device, is is not ?
So I don't know why a company can prevent me from doing ANYTHING I want with it !
You'll too!
So please, let us change our mind and buy an HTC with an unlocked bootloader !
Cyanogenmod, MIUI are very great in your phones ;)
Avoid all HTC Product if they fail to unlock.
Please continue letting your users do what they want on their phones, you won't loose money and everyone will be happy !
C'est que du bonus.
Vive Android
Or you will loose customers...
Cordialement
Stef(Nice,Côte d'azur,France)
Not iOS or WP7 !
Then, my future HTC should give me the same freedom and long life ...
Dont lock bootloaders, please... i dont want to buy a samsung :/
Merci
So please change your mind
et pourtant j'ai eu :
htc diamond (win6.1)
htc dream
htc magic
htc hero x2
htc desire
htc nexus one
htc desire hd x2
et bien un client de perdu
HTC, une des meilleurs marques qui n'ai jamais existé. Mais désormais, ils sont en train de s'endormir s'ils continuent de garder cette mentalité. Svp, redeenez ce que vous étiez !
After all we buy it, we need to be able to do whatever we want with it :)
Happy user of a HTC Desire I am seriously thinking to buy another brand for my next device.
Merci de déverrouiller le bootloaders !
envisage d'acheter le HTC Sensation seulement s'il est déverrouiller.
Htc why have youre change your politics about alternative rom. sony erricson has change his policy. Why not you?
qu'elle dommage!!
HTC you go for a fatal error.
please, please let me have cm7 on htc sensation!!!
I AM READY TO QUIT HTC FOR APPLE
i don't want to choose another phone ...
if you don't want to support your phone let us do that, people can improve your phone for free.
SO please note that htcsense.com doesn't work ...
Please,
Por favor,
Allow users to do want they want !
Merci d'avance !
This has brought misfortune to Nokia, and WindowsMobile.
And Apple did not have as much success as Android, which is very open.
Mais si les prochains htc sont verrouillés, pas sûr que je reparte avec marque.
I will go to other brands for my next phones and/or tablet with unlocked boootloaders.
Unlock my Desire S (SAGA) !
Build quality and liberty choose my custom ROM. IF HTC is not customisable, y change for Samsung, or other is free.
HTC je ne comprends pas votre politique.
i want S-OFF back ................
Mais pourquoi voulez vous perdre votre capital de sympathie ?
Sans Bootloader accessible, HTC n'est pas mieux que les autres marques ...
And Also Vive la france !
Débloquez le boot loader, s'il vous plait !
Peut-être un futur client, qui sait ?
I love HTC, but with a bootloader unlocked.
Unlock the bootloader., please !
Potential customer. Who knows ?
Thanks in advance.
Don't ever forget from where came your success these 2 last years ;)
Congrats htc. U have lost me. And im glad that i made 500 + people aware of it.
But when the phone isn't supported anymore, why not allow to unlock it?
Boot-loader Bloqué = Téléphone mort né
or no buying....
Monde cruel.
Goodbye htc. Hello lg and zte
EstebanTet, from Spain.
It's good for you, HTC!
And your slogan HTC tottally yours fuck it false slogan change it to Limited yours pigs.
I am disappointed in you. My first smartphone was an HTC Excalibur, and since then all my phones have been HTC. If you don't unlock the bootloader then never again shall I purchase an HTC device.
--> what a stupid idea !
With locked bootloader, i will change for another brand of phone !!!
No More HTC for me as it not Simply mine
HTC Sense is useless for me,
CyanogenMod has my preference,
so stop the crap of S-ON alike...
By removing our ability to upgrade and customise our phones you greatly reduce the time for which they are usable. I am NOT willing to spend £200+ on a phone that is out of date in 2 months time.
What does HTC has to lose by keeping their phones open?
So i wish that htc will change their politic because i want a new htc phone in 4 months!!
2 yrs with a HTC Hero has been fun & the Sensation was looking tremendous but for the locked bootloader.
This now makes me consider an iPhone since all my freedoms have been quashed. A real shame.
Unlock it for those that can use it and get plenty of customers that will listen to those that can use it. Be smart htc.
I buy hardware from them. If I want to change my software, let me. Don't want to provide support till I switch back to the original stock software? Fine.
Just let me root/flash my phone as I please :(
je suis utilisateur de htc depuis de longues années :hero: hero, desire, desire hd.
Je ne renouvellerai pas mon telephone par un HTC si le bootloader est verouillé.
We choose htc phones because many support from many source, so we can up to date with our rom
But if you keep lock your BL maybe we will chose more friendly brand
Like sony ericsson & samsung
I think that says it all !
No locked bootloader !!
It is time companies take the community into account in their business plan. Also bring back the trackpad an physical buttons
Cordialement, Damien Bourneuf
Thanks HTC
If it is like this, I will not buy terminal
You lock, I don't buy.
You unlock, I will probably buy.
That's simple.
and please get superamoled screens for your phones :p
*Puss in Boots' eyes*
Don't copy apple and his sh**
You made the best phone until now
I will not buy any htc mobile if their bootloader is signed
Because I want a succesor for my Desire. I wont buy the sensation just because of that.
Quel sera mon prochain téléphone?
I'm on my 5th HTC phone, this may well be my last!
Don't punish your customers, they may punish you.
now i wait for new sony ericsson phone. they support us and unlock bootload.
J'en ai marre de ces roms customisées par les opérateurs, les mises à jour ne suivent pas, la seule façon d'avoir la dernière version, c'est d'installer des roms personnalisées, ce que le bootloader bloqué rend très compliqué.
by locking the bootloaders, u'r killing the creativity..
Think smart, think open. Unlock HBOOT.
Cheers
please unlock the bootloader
C'mon HTC... please
And besides - tivoisation is just being an ass...
That's just why you sold so mutch phones till now!
See Sony Ericsson, that have a how-to guide to unlock the bootloader of our devices, or Samsung, or LG...
Please!
(excuseme for my english...)
It's now impossible for me to restore savegames from my old phone's apps.
HTC must stay free
I purchased HTC Incredible S after I tried Android on my HD2 for a few months. It did not hold me up from upgrading at all. Instead, it makes me wanting a 'genuine' Android after the trial.
Allowing NAND updates and custom ROM's will only motivate your customers to continue buying HTC products. Once I know it's locked, it actually leads me to look at other Andriod phones.
Don't hurt yourself.
French user of HTC and Desire Desire HD, thank you not lock your Future phone !!
Dear Aydin Koycu,
Thank you for contacting HTC support regarding your HTC Wildfire.
I understand you are enquiring about the locked bootloaders on our handsets.
The reason we have locked bootloaders is due to the amount of repairs we have to service, as other ROMs damage the phones.
It is for this reason we no longer allow other ROMs to be installed on our range.
I trust that this resolves your query, please do not hesitate to contact us again if required.

HTC
Hope they listen now everybody write them like me.
Please...give us an open bootloader
I have been anticipating the release of the Evo 3D, but am heading out to get a Nexus S 4g today. Will check back with you in another 2 yrs to see if you are still around.
Damn you HTC, I loved you so!
If I'm spending MY MONEY on a phone, it's MY PHONE, period. I get the final say what goes onto my phone. If HTC isn't going to support my right to choose, then I'm putting my money somewhere else.
HTC is destroying theirself.
Remove the cryptographically signed bootloaders. I am looking elsewhere otherwise after being a loyal HTC user.
I can't believe I just instantly had all interest stripped away from me.
If lock down is true Samsung here I come
Ive recommend your products to friends and family and they bought.
That wont be happening anymore you lost
Or i won't buy it :)
Needless to say, I still won't upgrade if it's locked down.
allow the handheld market to grow and develop. allow the open source community access to the devices. not only for old equipment but also for the really slick real work features they bring to the devices.
I will not buy an android device unless I have the ability to root it. It is as simple as that.
This decision will likely cause me to switch from HTC devices (which I've used for years) to another device that will let me customize it.
Please do the right thing. Unlock it.
Thanks you,
Chris. (HTC Loyal User/Customer Of 6 Years.)
Generally it seems like HTC makes high quality products, but openness is far more important to me than a pretty design, and I won't hesitate to buy another brand phone if HTC decides to lock theirs.
Though it seems that the concept that had helped to set it apart from Apple has transformed in the eyes of the originating company. Locking the bootloader and NAND blatantly defy the meaning of open source.
BAD FORM!!!
Do you see how many customers you will loose.I my self was ordering three evo 3d's but now who knows
#youlockwewalk
Please reconsider this change, as after this petition I will speak with my wallet and the wallets of those I can influence.
I was about to purchase a samsung galaxy S2 however when the sensation was announced I had put off buying the samsung phone.
This news about a locked bootloader on the sensation has made me decide that waiting for the sensation was a bad idea.
Ever since my 6700 days I thought HTC was on top.
If they insist on being like L(ow) G(rade), Then I for one will have to shop elseware.
HTC, Please take the hint not the bribe...
But your decision to lock the Evo 3D and by lock I mean make it impossible nut just tricky to flash, I think this is unfair. People who root their phones do not do it because they want free software or services we do it because we want to get the most out of our phone.
If you are doing this because you think that people who root their phones are the ones that damage their phones, as a technician I disagree, most phone replacements come from charging ports or poor batteries.
As a closing note I have a little snippet from the internet that kind is kind of related.
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/extra-credits/2653-Piracy
We will not be tied down... If we wanted to be, we'd get an apple...
The developer and enthusiast community sets the trends, inspires gadget-lust, and advertises for you more than your statistics could possibly capture. The EVO 3D seems from preliminary accounts to be one of the best phones of our day -- but so, too will Apple's iPhone 5 (TM). HTC's Android offerings have long attracted enthusiasts who disapproved of Apple's lockdown practices and who wanted an open, flexible device.
Don't alienate those who love Android most -- the enthusiasts, early adopters, modders, and developers who have always looked to you as a model of openness and community-friendliness. The Evo series, for instance (not to mention the legendary HD2) has remained popular, up-to-date, relevant, and in-demand within these and other circles, and huge strides toward enhanced functionality, user-friendliness, and customization have been achieved well beyond HTC's (and even the community's) wildest dreams.
We're more than just ~10k individuals who happened to chance upon this random (but highly provocative) petition or other modes of complaint. Most of us have directly and indirectly induced the purchase of HTC devices for friends, family, and even total strangers by way of extolling the virtues of your devices, their capabilities, and the ecosystem you enabled.
This impassioned plea isn't just my own, nor is it merely that of the thousands of concerned signers of this petition, facebook/twitter commenters or forum-goers. I haven't chimed in on any of these other avenues of expression, nor was I planning to do so here, but to my surprise, I did. I mention this because even had I not said a thing or complained aloud, I would have absolutely boycotted the product and company I had eyed exclusively for many years.
For a company to turn on those who love it most is a very cruel and monstrous twist of fate, indeed; a betrayal in the purest sense. As a company (with attendant brand), to lose the passion of the most passionate fans is to lose the most valuable part of oneself. Sales in the short-term will be negatively affected, but in the long term they may become even worse -- all stemming from an unprecedented lockdown policy on the part of the company formerly glorified as a pioneer of Android and the openness-friendly ideology it represents.
Please remember, for every person that voices their distaste for a locked bootloader, there are exponentially more people who either didn't know where to voice their opinion, or didn't think their opinion would be heard.
In regards to your companies recent comments about "reconsidering" the decision -- pull a Motorola (ie say you are considering changing your minds, but do it anyway), and I most definitely will never purchase an HTC phone, nor will I ever recommend it.
I also work for a Telecomm company that sells your products. I tend to get a lot of questions from friends/family about what phone to buy. Do the open-source thing; the right thing. Keep the bootloader unlocked.
Android = closed source = what os should i go to now iphone lmao
We (as in modders and tweakers) may be the vocal minority, but we also influence many purchases by talking to friends, family and co-workers. Word of mouth travels fast, ask Motorola.
Please keep that in mind while your current policy is under review
If HTC phones are locked forget me buying HTC phones from now on.. I even have a youtube channel where i reveiew apps, tech and more.. But if this happens then i'm suggesting all my fans to stay away from HTC phones.. sorry :(
now every new phones from HTC have a locked bootloader, I'm going to look for other brand for my next upgrade
Thank You
Please don't lock the bootloader down!
Show me any disadvantage you have suffered from an open and rootable EVO. There is none. I'll show you a disadvantage to locking the 3D: 500 fewer dollars out of my pocket into yours. Wise up.
Down with locked bootloaders and whichever company supports them!
They need to think about how many consumers thier gonna lose.
Until recently I was a proud HTC customer.
Looks like Samsung is getting my money now.
Open source for LIFE!!!
Ur locking out ppl who made ur devices popular and famous....
Stop supporting the carrier's "device subsidy w/contract" business model. China and others are ready to start flooding the world market with high-end sub-$100 devices. Save your brand and keep your market momentum by putting your customers first. There is no good business reason to lock down your devices. Its the year 2011 - customers are loyal to brands - not utility companies. Let the carriers be pipes and differentiate yourselves from other OEMs by delighting customers and innovating as you have been doing. At best - you will become one of the top world brands. At worst - you will be accused of price-fixing and collusion by protecting a faux business model. You are the face of this industry. Be a leader.
Locking your(our) phones down now is a slap in the face and best summed up by the common idiom "don't bite the hand that feeds you", as that's what we, the large, development community of both Htc and Android, feel you are doing to us. You are taking the one necessary feature away from us without any due cause or justification whatsoever. We are both happy and greatful that you have announced you will be reviewing your bootloader policy, but to be honest, and we believe fair, that just isn't good enough. We want unlocked or unlockable devices and anything short will not do. We may not sink htc single-handedly, but please don't underestimate our influence on the market. We refuse to support companies that lock down our devices and keeping us from what is rightfully ours, both monetarily and by word of mouth. We are not a violent group, we wont attack your website or get involved in other spiteful actions, but we will fight for what we deserve in the best way we can, on the quarterly profit reports. You may not see it in quarter one, but you will se it. Please don't mistake this for an open, aggressive threat, but rather a solidified group who have been forced to come together to wield the only power we can, the Almighty dollar. So please, Htc, we urge you to strongly review your policy of keeping your devices locked. We also invite you to open up a dialogue with us, the development community, on this matter. Perhaps we can learn from eachother and share some empathy from both sides. Thank you for listening,
Andy Zawacki
On behalf of the Android development community.
You must hear them!!!
sorry for my bad english
Please don't make the mistake of completely preventing people from modifying the SOFTWARE of their devices to their liking. I read someone posting a reply from HTC saying that they're getting even more hardcore about it because of custom ROMs damaging phones and people trying to use their warranty to fix it. The solution is simple: unlocked NAND/Bootloader means a voided warranty. If the user isn't smart enough to take the necessary precautions when rooting and modifying their phone they shouldn't be doing so in the first place.
Make it extremely clear to all users that the process of rooting your device (through sanctioned methods like in the Nexus phones) WILL void your warranty!
No HTC Phone
leave it unlocked!!
This would be a major turn down for android lovers.
HTC, locking the bootloaders would drive your consumer base in the arms of your rivals in the marketplace.
Motorola and Samsung have changed stance and decided not to lock their bootloaders for fear of losing their customers.
On a side note, for those that do "root" their devices are doing it for fun, experimentation, and of course, using YOUR product/device to its fullest.
HTC, with all due respect, would it be fair for both parties to be happy and let everything the way it is right now than risk struggling to re-gain your consumers simply because of locking bootloaders?
Thank you for your time and consideration. =)
I've owned many HTC phones, since back in the WinMo days. I'm on an Evo 4G now...thanks to today's news that the Evo3D will have a locked bootloader- you can be certain I won't be buying it. Please understand that locked bootloaders will hurt your image as well as your sales.
HTC has long been the modders weapon of choice, but if you don't revise this policy then all the developers will go elsewhere, as will the power-users - you know, the ones that all the non-techy people go to for advice and recommendations?
HTC you're already getting your ass handed to you on the hardware front by Samsung, you can ill afford to alienate those people who have up til now been your biggest fans. They will go elsewhere and take their money, friends, family and work colleagues with them.
I was intend of buying a desire S but I won't until the bootloader will be : S OFF.
people who buy ur mobiles dont lock then......
Switching to different brand, unless it gets unlocked...
Keep the OS open!
but we <3 xda devs roms ;)
Don't make yourselves look petty by stopping the devs you've relied on all these years from continuing to help you out.
Unlocked bootLoaders == maybe HTC in the future.
Simple as that!
But for a year on im going to play with a SGS2, with unlocked bootloader.
HTC please reconsider this. This policy will make a lot of people hate HTC!
as much as I like HTC products, but I and probably a lot of others will be looking at other brands for future upgrades if this continues.
Thank you,
Godzson
But Locking down the phone is going to push so many people away from your company. When I am paying $200+ for a phone and have the option to change things about it, that is my choice. Htc should just stress that if they mess it up for loading custom roms that isnt there concern.
HTC Dont lose the fan base you have, alot of people respect your company...Dont jump on the wagon with Moto
we are being limited to ONE possibility, Theirs.
I have just cancelled two EVO 3D pre-orders, one for my wife and one for me.
People share positive information with 2-3 people and negative information with 10. I will be telling everybody I know to boycott HTC until bootloaders are unlocked.
I am upgrading 2 Heros in August but as of now, it looks like my new phones will not be HTC.
2. Release HTC Sense SDK
3. Allow user created Custom ROM's incorporating HTC Sense
4. Watch as HTC customers multiply
GOOGLE I Hope you are listening, Ultimately if your patners start pissing your most loyal fans off, you are the one who is going to lose market share in the end to microsoft and apple. Iam kind of getting pissed at Google too, because they are just sitting on the sideline and not saying anything.
To put quite simply, and as another user submitted...
You lock, we walk
viva la rEVOlution
#youlockwewalk
It's what separated you from the other companies, was your ability to provide high quality phones, and allow us to actually "use" them ...
So please HTC, reconsider the idea of locking the bootloader!
