HTC Bootloaders and NAND

GOOD NEWS!!!!!!!!

‎”There has been overwhelmingly customer feedback that people want access to open bootloaders on HTC phones. I want you to know that we’ve listened. Today, I’m confirming we will no longer be locking the bootloaders on our devices. Thanks for your passion, support and patience,” Peter Chou, CEO of HTC

New Update posted on Facebook !!

https://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=10150305151453084

What is the point of this?

The idea of this is to convince htc to unlock the bootloaders and disable the NAND protection on their phones

Why should I support this?

Unlocking the bootloader and disabling the NAND protection will allow users to keep their phones up to date using custom roms such as CM7. Take the htc wildfire for example. In december 2010, HTC released a 2.2 update for the wildfire. However, hidden in this update was a new bootloader which could not (and still can not as of the 9th may 2011) be modified. It is unlikely that HTC will release another update for this phone, meaning that users are going to be stuck on this rom. The reason? So HTC can sell new phones. However what this is doing is putting users off buying HTC’s devices since rival companies have announced that the users can easily unlock the bootloaders on their devices.

I'm fed up of this froyo update in wildfire.. HTC you must not lock bootloader its not fair.. If u stop updates from ur side every1 are going to suffer.. As u are intended to lock bootloaders in all ur upcoming models I must say that no one is going to buy that scrap that is locked as they can't do customization of the phone they bought with their money not yours... Only the newbies gonna buy it for the first time but from next time they'll be aware of it..

Locked Bootloaders of HTC = Very Least sales of HTC

Please unlock bootloaders of all phone to increase sale of ur smartphones as well as to increase the interest to buy HTC for your customers...

HTC, we need an option on our own whether to lock or unlock our bootloaders. Donot make us annoyed by locking the boot loaders so heavily.

I hate when manufacturers try to "rent" a device. When I buy a device, it's fully mine. Meaning, nothing should stand on my way to modding it. Stop locking the bootloader, I wanted an Android for being able to make it work the way I want. If HTC takes this away, I WILL find another manufacturer.

i would sure love to have open bootloaders so that some custom roms can be loaded to have more freedom of apps loading.

compared wildfire with bootloader 0.8x and 1x and 1x was less apps loaded but still i had 20mb free space though i installed all apps on SD and 0.8x loader wildfire had mixed sd and in phone memory installed and funny still had 85mb free internal memory ..

dont understand why htc made locked new bootloader and made phone heavier.

please open it up

Please unlock the bootloader, because I want to fully enjoy my Wildfire. The situation resembles that of Sony V.S. The rest of the world. It's funny that I can not do what I like with the hardware for which a fully paid. It's like if I bought a car and could not fill the fuel at stations that I want, but only those which allowed the manufacturer. I understand the question of warranty but if the user wants to change the software on my phone, knowing the danger, then it should not be that difficult, so please ....

If you guys expect to keep us "the customers" happy then i as a proud owner of a HTC Evo suggest you guys stop trying to lock our bootloader's.. after all we do pay for our devices so we should be able to do what we want with them.. your job is to make them and distribute them and receive your money.. because if you guys DO lock bootloader's then trust me and believe me when i say this.. WE ALL THINK YOU SHOULD KEEP YOUR DEVICES WITH YOU! WE DON'T WANT ANY PART TO DO WITH IT!. Besides come on HTC you guys make great and wonderful phones.. why ruin such great phones with something so selfish.. so please for your sake and for our customer satisfaction please don't lock OUT BOOTLOADER'S!
Rafael Rosado
This signed bootloader/nand method needs to be stopped now, ur cellphone sales will decline cause of this, leave the option to unsigned it so power users can turn it off at will, and normal users can leave it turned on, as most of the don't even realized there phone has a signed bootloader/nand.....

I paid almost $600 for this mini computer. And the manufacturer wants to tell me what I can and cannot do with my device? Locked bootloaders and Nands should be illegal. It's like buying a computer and not being able to upgrade the OS. Imagine that every time you want to upgrade your computer you had to buy a new one. All so they can make a dollar. This is bordering racketeering. Tires wearing out on your car? Can't buy new tires, gotta get a new car. That's a racket if I've ever seen one.

I have always loved htc phones and I would like to continue buying your devices. Recently however sony-ericsson has committed to opening their boot-loaders to be more developer friendly. With open-source software updates constantly being made available for unlocked devices, I am more prone to buy a device that i know will continue to have support, even if that support is unofficial and strictly community oriented. what you are essentially doing by locking down your bootloaders is telling us, your customers, that you don't care about our wants or continuing to deliver up to date software.
Justin Hall Sr.
I was going to buy a HTC smartphone when the contract is up on my Motorola Droid, but since HTC wants to join Motorola in the locked bootloader club, I guess I'll have to look elsewhere. Thanks for trying to turn Android into iOS.

We buy the phone. We should be free to change the software on it. That is part of ownership. A locked bootloader restricts usage of hardware owned owned by consumer. Lock the bootloader if you lease the phone, not if you sell it.

You are taking the lowness out of Android by locking your bootlaaders. What is the device community supposed to do? Moto had their lock down phase and decided they were going to do the right thing this year by allowing them to be unlocked. Look at Sony, they allow theirs to be unloacked via a public website. Now enters HTC? Do the Android community a solid and do the right thing here. Don't make us choose a sub par device manufacturer just because of bootloader security.

Dear HTC,
I have been a happy customer with you since the T-Mobile G1(First Android Phone). You make quality devices, but when you lock your phones your not gaining anything but mad customers. I will be switching to another manufacturer(as well as many others) until this is resolved. Please HTC I do not want to have to settle for Samsung, LG, or worst Motorola(rumored). They have all embraced the unlocked bootloaders.

HTC your phones run on the Android OS platform which is a open source system, if you don't want to unlock the Bootloader start running Apple's OS which stifles creativeness on your device's. Also drop the slogan "Explore the Possibilities" since your making it impossible!

I love HTC phones because of the build quality, excellent updates and excellent service. I am getting ready for an upgrade but can't consider the HTC Sensation or other phones that are boot locked. After HTC stops supporting the phones the only option for security and other updates is ROMs. Samsung and Motorola are getting their act together fast and offer compelling alternatives with decent quality!

We have been some of the biggest cheerleaders and spokespeople for your devices. I am personally responsible for 5 purchases myself, and have convinced 30 people to buy one or more phones. Out of those 30 people all but one have chosen to root. Many times it was due to the desire to customize their devices how they felt was best for them. The other reason tends to be in response to sluggish updates.
If we seemed outspoken when we were thrilled with your devices, just remember bad news reaches an even larger audience. We love HTC products but this decision forces our hand... we will have to go elsewhere in response.
I don't want to leave, please don't make me.

I have purchased a g1 and nexus one. This is the main reason I have the nexus one. I'm a huge fan of Google and HTC. I enjoy the Nexus One and look forward to the new quad-core coming out and will be buying one, not because of the rom on the phone but the Spec.s. However if the phone is not able to be flashed I will be (sadly) going to another manufacture. I know this is how the majority of the community feels. Most consumers wont sign this and will simply move to other brands (ugh like Samsung, Lg, or Motorola). I would hate this as I have had nothing but greatness from you guys and look forward to purchasing as many great products as I can afford in the future.

why put hurdles in the way of how people use your equipment? it takes very little time for the modding community to crack theses things, surely the fact that people do this means they want to freely use their phones as the see fit.

I only recently rooted my phone and was amazed at what extra functionality it gives.

Think more to develop a solution for a worst case scenario to bring a bricked phone to life again than to think about solutions where your money givers get more and more angry.

i own a Desire and was planning on getting another HTC for Xmas BUT locked bootloaders will turn me away from your fine devices!

HTC Nexus One - I will choose a Galaxy 2 S over the new sensation once it's confirmed as locked.

Android is meant to be fun but if I can't play under the covers I'm not interested.

Come on HTC do the right thing, after all you are making a huge profit so give something back.

HTC, your ease of modification is why I always recommended you over Motorola once they started their lockdown. Motorola learned their lesson and are reversing their policy. Are you really going to make the same mistake? HTC used to be a legend amongst the Android community, but that's a title that's quickly going to the likes of LG and Samsung.

I'm using an HD2 with a custom ROM right now. Without it, it was full of bugs and annoying to use. HTC's support for the HD2 died shortly after the release.
So a locked smartphone for me is absolutely useless. (Think of the newest Android bugs and the sluggish response from the manufacturers...)
I thought my next one will be a Sensation... as it seems, I was wrong.
It's a shame HTC!

HTC aren't doing themselves any favours by consistently releasing devices without any significant internal storage. The main feauture of Android is its openess and its custom roms. If you have a choice of one (normally outdated and featureless) on a HTC device, or sometimes over 20 on a Samsung, you know which phone people are going to choose. This is for your benefit too.
Alex Jackson
The thing is, HTC have two choices to keep customers. 1 - Make a new ROM for every phone they have in only a few weeks after the newest version of Android comes out. Or they can 2 - Unlock the bootloaders, and let the android community keep people's phones up to date. I know which is easier for HTC...

I love HTC since a long time. I will change my phone in the middle of June and i wanted the Sensation. But when i saw that the bootloader is locked, i decided to buy the Galaxy S2.

So please, let us change our mind and buy an HTC with an unlocked bootloader !

As a Desires owner, I love customize my phone. That can be possible because you let the bootloader open. Now, I've a big problem : I want to buy your new product (the Sensation) BUT you have secured the bootloader. I don't say that the Sense 3D is bad, but some optimisations or personalisations could magnify the phone. And for that...please, unlock the bootloader. If not, byebye HTC and welcome to Samsung (Galaxy S2) !

I am very disappointed with this change in policy. I bought the first Diamond and it was largely through the efforts of communities of developers (like XDA) that I became a fan of the brand, which I confess products are of high quality. Today I'd like that HTC does not forgot the people who are largely responsible of its success

Fuck HTC ! I've got an unlocked HD2, I'm very happy I can change rom (and OS, optionnally) as I want. I hope this continues for futures phones ! We're sick & tired of companies (HTC, Apple, Sony, etc). that reduce the possbilities one can have with its hardware... These phones are OUR machines, we ABSOLUTELY REQUIRE to be able to do what we want with them...

I bought a Desire last june 2010, since then I always told myself that my future smartphone would be a HTC : I love Sense, I thinks that your phone's design is original and I like it, and most of all I like to play with my phone (technically speaking) however I want. Since you changed your policy about bootloaders I started to change my mind and I seriously consider to try another brand. I'm kinda disapointed, the Sensation is all what I craved for, except the philosophy, which is above all to me.

Congrats htc. U have lost me. And im glad that i made 500 + people aware of it.

I am a long time HTC fan but tried out a Motorola device. I decided that I would no longer support Moto over their bootloaders and got a Thunderbolt instead of waiting for devices that are superior in specs like the X2, Bionic or Droid 3. If HTC continues down this path I will be forced to move to only using Samsung and Sony devices. HTC has a long tradition of indie dev support from way back in the Windows Mobile days. This is why HTC is where they are now.
